That There Building

There is only one building in Hanover that I really like and I can never remember its name. Until about a week ago I thought it was the math building but really it is physics. It isn’t Exeter Library good but it does have nice airy feel inside. It is notable for being one of the few examples of brutalism on campus. Brutalism as an architectural style, is worth noting because of the public’s near uniform hatred of the finished product. Brutalist masterpieces often come off as being cold, oppressive and ill suited for their purpose.

That There Place

Good brutalism is about cheap and airy spaces that frame scenery without obscuring or competing with the view. In many poorly executed examples, the end result looks and feels like a bunker. Boston’s city hall is an excellent example of how good brutalism can translate into an awful municipal complex.
