The Secret Garden

Sunday, April 20th, 2008

My boss says it is my parent’s fault for raising me in The Secret Garden.

Peckett's garden

As a kid there were two or three abandoned gardens I regularly explored, but this was my favorite.

    Things To Know

  • The first ski school in America would meet around here.
  • Allegedly, modern snow making was invented in that red house.
  • I have a postcard I bought on ebay that shows what this looked like when it was nice.
  • John D. Rockefeller, the ugliest of the Rockefellers was fond of telling Peckett’s busboys when tipping them that he made his money penny by penny.
  • Bette Davis met her gayest husband here.
  • The saying “He’s a real Arthur Farnsworth,” comes from the above statement.
  • The neighborhood rumor was that the hotel closed not because of economics but segregation.

My window

My alleged “chainsaw,” window.

In the home that I spent the majority of my childhood in, my bedroom was located at the intersection of old and new, cape and saltbox.

Stare at the second image and see how many shapes you see, count them. Now look again, I guarantee you will see more.

I Want To Go Regional Shopping

Sunday, April 6th, 2008

You look hot today, I don’t.

I don’t miss Filene’s but I can imagine someone might. I do miss regional chains Burdine’s, Kaufmann’s, Steinbach and Lazarus. They are gone now because of malls and stupid corporate decisions. However, in the middle of there country there still are amazing department stores I have never visited. I propose a regional shopping tour where we visit the finest that the rest of America has to offer.

I need to visit Shirokiya, Younker’s, Loeb’s, Gottschalks, Palais Royal, Boscov’s and Von Maur.
