The Upper Valley Isn’t Really That Big Of A Dump

upper valley new hampshire vermont

As a child, my backyard looked like the alps and my life was like the sound of music without the touching and excessive ornamentation. Now, I live in the Upper Valley and I hate it. There are plenty of reasons to move to the NH or VT side of the Connecticut River but sadly/luckily none of them apply to me. I’m not a doctor, I don’t want to live in a white flight community, and I’m not in an unhappy marriage. The other night I was happy to see this nice sunset coming from Vermont and thought I would document it. For about five minutes I almost didn’t want to move away.

Who needs to save buildings when you can tear them down and build new ones that look older. I liked Portsmouth, NH as a kid because it looked cool and was kinda sleazy. I like it even more now that anything built in the last 50 years has been replaced with ugly condos and some awful post-modern interpretation of the past.

When I look at an older structure, I ask myself, “what is the story behind this building?” If I’m looking at a histora-ma-logical structure, I ask myself “What is the story this building is trying to tell me?”
