Wednesday, November 16th, 2005

By Lindstrom, Martin Some brands are so thoroughly integrated into our society that we hardly perceive them as being brands. This is a story about how one of these brands became an overnight global success.

Asbestos, Quebec

asbestos, asbestos image

I’m thinking of putting off my trip to Chernobyl and instead visiting the mining town of Asbestos, Quebec. It is a little closer and a lot safer.

Asbestos is located near Drummondville and can be accessed via a shortcut to Quebec City. The town is famous for having the largest asbestos mines in the world and being the site of one of the most violent labour disputes in Canadian history. One time, on a family trip to Quebec City we stopped in Asbestos and visited a local mineral museum. The mines are truly massive and a little frightening when you think about the health risks associated with them. I believe at that time, you could take a full tour of the working asbestos mines, I wonder if you can still do that?

Chernobyl Tour/Zone of Alienation

Saturday, November 12th, 2005

I have been obsessed with the Chernobyl Accident and “Zone of Alienation,” as long as I can remember. The idea of visiting the area didn’t hit me until I saw the infamous kiddofspeed website which depicts a sexy scientist riding through the radioactive landscape on her motorcycle. HOT!! (like post cold war buffy) The story is mostly fiction but she did actually visit Prypriat, Ukraine and the outside of the Chernobyl reactor on a guided tour. I found the company that gave the tour and I am thinking of going on it myself. Naturally, I would need to learn more about radiation but I think it would be a worth while experience.

Update 11/15

I found a better tour. This tour offers a two day option.

baby crying buddha

Ever since I can remember, my family has had this miniature buddha baby in front of our house. My mother used to say it was to keep the Jehovah’s Witnesses away. In the winter we would dress it up and put hats on it so it wouldn’t get cold.

Gracie Mansion: Sofa Art

Thursday, November 10th, 2005

My friend Peter introduced me to art world legend Gracie Mansion and pointed me at this great article.

“From the various one-night cash-and-carry hullabaloos and the infamous “Famous Show” to any number of theme shows (such as “Sofa/Painting,” in which artists created not only the paintings but the proverbial couches to match), each exhibition was a concept, an event, an installation, a party.”
From an ArTForum article by Carlo McCormick.

I had a friend who had a three piece sofa set and a matching triptych in her condo that I always admired. In college, my friends had a three piece sofa set without a matching triptych and I complained about it often. I even went so far as to offer to paint them a triptych that would match.
